The 3 Primary Paths
There are currently three Primary Paths: Arithmetic, Typing, Spreadsheet. Each "path" is a learning tool for students and instructors. These tools enable students to work on the computer at their own pace performing assignments specified by their teacher, turor or parent.
ArithmeticThe Arithmetic path provides interactive arithmetic exercises in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division (including long division) with optional decimals and signed numbers. It is intended for children in kindergarten through 6th grade.
TypingThe Typing path provides a mini word processor useful for pre-schoolers, students, the handicapped, adult trainees, the retired or anyone else who wants to learn the basics without incurring the cost and frustration of a complete word processor like Microsoft Word or Works, or the stark interface of Windows Notepad.
This word processor keeps it simple by providing only basic features, and confining a document to what can be seen all at once on the screen. It offers basic typing practice without the tricky features and complicated screen images which can make learning frustrating and sometimes overwhelming for beginners. Features such as copy, cut and paste are provided on an optional basis so that instructors can turn them off and on for focused training. Once the basics are mastered here the user is ready to move to a commercial word processing.
SpreadsheetThe Spreadsheet path provides a mini electronic spreadsheet for those who want to learn the basics without incurring the cost and frustration of a professional spreadsheet like Microsoft Excel. It offers the basics without overwhelming the learner with choices and mysteriously responding to unintended input.
This spreadsheet has the generic grid of rows, columns and cells but it is not scrollable thereby avoiding a major source of confusion for new users. The spreadsheet provides for number and text input and formula creation, as well as copying and some formatting capabilities. Like the word processor, features can be turned off and on for focused training.
